Centene is a leading multi-line healthcare enterprise that provides programs and related services to individuals receiving benefits under Medicaid, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). In addition, the Company contracts with other healthcare organizations to provide specialty services including behavioral health, disease management, managed vision, nurse triage, pharmacy benefit management and treatment compliance.
MEDICAID
Medicaid, the largest source of health insurance following Medicare and employee-based plans, provides health insurance to low-income families and individuals with disabilities. Because each state determines, within federal standards, its own eligibility requirements, benefits, payment rates, and program standards, there are 56 different Medicaid programs (one for each state, territory and the District of Columbia). Medicaid eligibility is dependent on both income and asset requirements, as determined by the states.
SCHIP
Created by the Federal Balanced Budget Act of 1997, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) helps states extend coverage to children whose family's income level was too high to qualify for Medicaid assistance but who still could not afford to purchase private insurance. The state and federal government approved $24 billion over five years for states to provide new health coverage for millions of children - the largest children's healthcare investment since the creation of Medicaid in 1965.
SSI
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal Medicaid program that helps provide managed care services for the aged, people who are blind and those with disabilities. An SSI enrollee typically has a chronic medical and/or behavioral illness and is economically disadvantaged. A significant portion of Medicaid enrollment (26%) meets SSI requirements. Several states have developed special programs for people with disabilities, and others have enrolled them in their mainstream Medicaid program.
