Centene’s Suicide Prevention Program Helps Save Lives Through Data, Access, and Connection
09/04/2025

Stephanie Lowe, Senior Care Manager, Transition of Care at MHS Health Wisconsin, is dedicated to fostering meaningful connections and supporting members through Centene’s Choose Tomorrow program.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness, share resources and offer hope. According to CDC’s Suicide Facts, suicide is among the top ten leading causes of death in the United States, claiming the life of one person every 11 minutes. For every death by suicide, there are 25 attempts, and countless more who seriously consider taking their life.
Choose Tomorrow™, our flagship suicide prevention program, helps Centene members through some of life’s most critical moments. Many individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts lack access to interventions that could save their lives. Choose Tomorrow bridges that gap by improving access to care, intervening early, facilitating connections to community resources, and giving members tools to help them live fuller, healthier lives.
The most effective care meets members before they reach a moment of crisis. Choose Tomorrow leverages advanced data insights and predictive modeling to create individualized member risk profiles, grounded in the latest research in suicidology, behavioral health, and social drivers of health. The program identifies and reaches out to approximately 10,000 Centene members annually, connecting 100% of those engaged to vital care, resources, and services in their communities. Impact data tracked by the Choose Tomorrow team shows a promising 6% reduction in suicide-related claims processed by Centene during the first two quarters of 2025.
At the center of it are Centene employees, like Stephanie Lowe, Senior Care Manager, Transition of Care at MHS Health Wisconsin. Stephanie and her fellow care managers conduct weekly outreach to members enrolled in Choose Tomorrow. Our members know them as the reliable and trusted voice on the end of the line that asks, “How are you?” and listens without judgement or expectation. For many members, it is this voice that helps them stay engaged in life-saving care and build resiliency so that they can stay well.
“It all comes back to one word: connectedness,” said Stephanie. “So many of the challenges and feelings that our members are going through stem from the same thing — a lack of connectedness. They feel alone. I may be the only person who’s listening. I tell them, ‘I’m here to support you and I can help in these ways.’ It’s amazing how much can change with connection.”
Through data-driven precision, proactive intervention, and human connection, Choose Tomorrow is making an impact — proving that when we reach out at the right time and listen with purpose, we empower members to choose another tomorrow.
