Continuing Progress on Prior Authorization: Advancing Standardization Through Provider‑Informed Collaboration

Today, AHIP announced that Centene and other leading health plans are joining together to standardize prior authorization submission requirements. This action reflects continued progress in advancing our commitments to streamline and simplify prior authorization by easing administrative burden and giving providers a more transparent, consistent, and predictable experience.

Provider Feedback at the Center of Standardizing Electronic Prior Authorization

Centene’s support for a new, standardized approach to submitting required clinical information as part of electronic prior authorization is grounded in sustained provider engagement. Through our multi-channel listening program Voice of the Provider, providers emphasize the need for greater consistency and clarity in documentation requirements and prompts to reduce unnecessary resubmissions, delays, and confusion. 

Aligning Provider Insights With Industry Progress

In response to this feedback, Centene is reducing variation in clinical documentation requirements and is focused on enhancing electronic processes to speed response time and decisions. Standardizing prompts and defining expected information upfront can enable more efficient submissions, reduce back‑and‑forth, and streamline reviews when complete clinical information is provided.

We are proud to support this next phase of industry collaboration and recognize that meaningful change will occur through ongoing adoption and refinement. We will continue adopting these standards on a rolling basis after the commitment is implemented beginning January 2027, prioritizing solutions that are practical, scalable, and fit provider workflows, while maintaining critical safeguards that help ensure care is appropriate, effective, evidence-based, and affordable.
